ICF Research Branch in cooperation with the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications in Germany (at DIMDI)

Practical, standardized tools to assess and document functioning, disability, and health according to the WHO ICF in a variety of health conditions and settings

The WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is the accepted common framework for understanding and documenting functioning and disability.

The ICF Core Sets selected for this book have now been developed to facilitate the standardized use of the ICF in real-life clinical practice and thus improve quality of care. By using this collection of clear checklists, definitions, and forms, clinicians will quickly and easily be able to assess clients with a range of typical health conditions at different stages and in a variety of health care contexts.

This manual:
  • Introduces the concepts of functioning and disability
  • Describes how and why the ICF Core Sets have been developed
  • Shows, step-by-step, how to apply the ICF Core Sets in clinical practice
  • Includes all 31 ICF Core Sets plus documentation forms (more than 1,400 pages of printable PDFs) on a CD-ROM.

This manual is inherently multi-professional and will be of benefit not only for practitioners working in various health care contexts but also for students and teachers.

From the Reviews

"[F]unctional status may be a better indicator of health care needs and outcomes than is diagnosis alone. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), developed to capture the full range of human functioning, has gained wide acceptance among international rehabilitation and health researchers and professionals as a framework that can be used to support a systematicapproach for understanding chronic illness and disability across cultures…
"[T]his manual is reader friendly and cohesive, and offers tangible steps and resources (including printable documentation forms on CD-ROM) to assist clinicians in applying the ICF framework to rehabilitation assessment and planning across settings and health conditions."

Dr. Fong Chan, PhD, and Dr. Nicole Ditchman in PsycCRITIQUES, vol. 58, 2013

"By using this collection of clear checklists, definitions, and forms, clinicians will quickly and easily be able to assess clients with a range of typical health conditions at different stages and in a variety of health care contexts. [...] This manual is inherently multi-professional and will be of benefit not only for practitioners working in various health care contexts but also for students and teachers."
in Anticancer Research, Vol. 32, 2012

"The original International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is too complex and exhaustive for use in daily practice, so WHO developed a series of ICF Core Sets, [...] which can serve as minimal standards for assessment of function and disability across a variety of healthcare settings, including acute, postacute, and long-term care. The use of common assessment items at each stage allows clinicians to monitor an individual patient's progress over time and provides a common language of assessment that can be used by all members of an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team. [...] This [manual] will be a valuable resource to a variety of clinicians and healthcare professionals, particularly those involved in rehabilitation medicine. [...] The manual is easy to understand and very practical. It is suitable for practitioners and students in a variety of medical specialties, but it is particularly relevant to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation."
Linda L. Lovell, BS, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, in Doody's Notes, January 2013

Praise for the book

"A cohesive and comprehensive guide to the understanding of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and its implementation in clinical rehabilitation settings. It is an ideal information source for those serious about implementing comprehensive, patient-centered rehabilitation clinical programs within an international context. It answers well the questions: 'What is the ICF?' and 'What can I do with it'".
John L. Melvin, MD, MMSc, Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA

"This new perspective in functional assessment brings theory and practice together. The arduous challenge of discussing how ICF-based documentation can be used to describe patients' resources and possibilities is clarified by this manual in a comprehensible and precise way, enabling a conceptual and practical understanding by its reader".
Linamara Rizzo Battistella, MD, PhD, Past President of the ISPRM and Professor of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil
